Truck driver Kevin Roper has been charged after turning himself into authorities for causing the New Jersey car crash that severely injured comic actor Tracy Morgan.
Roper, 35, was driving the tractor-trailer that struck the luxury limo that was carrying Morgan, who was traveling for his Turn It Funny comedy tour. The Jonesboro, Ga., native faces one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. The lone fatality was comedian James McNair, who had been pronounced dead at the scene.
“Driver failed to observe slow-moving traffic ahead," New Jersey State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams said according to ABC News. “He observed at the last minute – just prior to impact – the limo bus carrying Morgan and his party.”
Alcohol is not thought to have been a factor in the accident, though it’s been reported that Roper may have been dozing prior to making impact with the limo bus.
Bail has been set at $50,000
Morgan remains unconscious and in critical condition. His ex-wife and high school sweetheart Sabina Morgan revealed his injuries included a broken leg.
“He’s not in good shape. I’m traumatized. I’m so upset. I can’t believe it. It’s like I’m in a nightmare,” Sabina Morgan, who has three children with the 30 Rock actor, told the New York Daily News. “We’re just still vigilant with prayer…They’re [our children] not holding up well at all.”
In a statement, Morgan’s rep revealed that Morgan was surrounded by his family and that there weren’t any updates on his condition. “His family is now with him (in hospital) and he is receiving excellent care,” the statement read. “We don’t anticipate much of a change in his condition today.”
