Tropicana Field May Be ‘Unsalvageable,’ Needs $39 Million Worth Of Repairs Following Damage From Hurricane Milton

Tampa’s Tropicana Field may be “unsalvageable” after being severely damaged during Hurricane Milton last month.

The field’s roof was completely shredded during the storm, and it is estimated that $39 million will go into restoring the home of the Tampa Bay Rays. Only $6.5 million of public funding has been set aside by the city council, meaning the Rays will have to cover the rest of the costs themselves.

It will take at least eight weeks to restore Tropicana Field, though the repairs will likely be temporary. The Rays are currently searching for a new home to begin their 2025 season, and are already considering building a new mega stadium worth $1.3 billion.

Before Milton’s arrival, Tropicana Field was used as a “temporary base camp” to support debris cleanup and house first responders. Following news of the stadium’s destruction, all personnel were evacuated.

Hurricane Milton was one of two hurricanes to pass through Florida last month. Though originally classified as a Category 3 storm, it was downgraded to a Category 2 storm upon making landfall. However, Tampa was still flooded and St. Petersburg recorded more than 16 inches of rain.
