The Tribeca Film Festival begins on April 20. Here are some events and discussions to look forward to.
The festival will run for ten days, from Thursday, April 20 through Sunday, April 30. The festivities, however, will feature a season opener on April 19. Aretha Franklin will be on hand, along with Earth Wind & Fire, Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, Dionne Warwick, and Jennifer Hudson to celebrate the great Clive Davis. The singers will perform in honor of who Franklin called, “the greatest record man of all time.”
On April 29, there will be screenings of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II at Radio City Music Hall. This will also feature a once-in-a-lifetime Q&A session with Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, James Caan, and Robert De Niro.
At the same time but downtown, Barbara Streisand will have an unusual chat with Robert Rodriguez in a “Tribeca Talks.” Rodriguez directed Sin City and From Dusk Til Dawn, and was hand-picked for this conversation with Streisand. Various other “Tribeca Talks” will stake place over the course of the festival, and will feature Jon Favreau and Scarlett Johansson, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Marina Abramović, Kobe Bryant, Michael Strahan, and Glen Keane, Dustin Hoffman and Noah Baumbach, and Bruce Springsteen and Tom Hanks.
Sean “Diddy” Combs will debut his documentary about Bad Boy Records at the Beacon Theater. The screening will also feature a live concert from Combs and Mase, Lil’ Kim, and Faith Evans. That will occur on April 23.
Then on April 28, Quentin Tarantino will host an anniversary screening of Reservoir Dogs for the film’s 25th anniversary. The director will provide his own 35mm print of the film. Following the screening will be a Q&A with Tarantino, producer Lawrence Bender, and some of the cast, including Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Harvey Keitel.
In addition, the festival will include a Virtual Arcade that will feature 30 different innovative videos on display to experience in virtual reality.
And of course, the film festival will feature many new films, from feature length to documentary to shorts. You can see the entire list of showings and events here.
