Trevor Noah, who has been tapped to replace Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, took to Twitter Tuesday to address the series of jokes he made on the social media site for which he’s been taken to task.

Noah, echoing the sentiments of comedians who’ve been rallying behind him, noted that the jokes were admittedly not successful and that they’re not indicative of who he is as a person or as a comedian. “To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian,” Noah wrote.

In light of the uproar caused Noah’s tweets, Comedy Central released a statement to show that the network still fully supports the young comic.

“Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included,” read the network’s statement. “To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”

Among the jokes that have caused Noah some early backlash are ones about Jewish people, women and Bruce Jenner.

 

Noah will replace Stewart on The Daily Show sometime later this year.
