Travis Wall dished on his long history on So You Think You Can Dance and how his choreography always makes viewers cry in an exclusive interview with uInterview.

Exclusive Interview With Travis Wall

Wall, 26, has been a choreographer on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance for the past five years, but he was also a finalist on the show’s second season in 2006. In his time as a contestant, Wall was featured in one of the most beloved SYTYCD dances, known as ‘the Bench Routine.’

Wall recently returned to the stage, performing his Emmy-nominated routine “Wicked Game” alongside Season 10 winner Amy Yakima. “I had a blast doing it,” Wall told uInterview.

Travis Wall On Emotional Choreography

“Wicked Game” might just be one of Wall’s favorite pieces from his catalogue, though he revealed to uInterview that the dance he choreographed for his mother in 2009 is also a favorite of his.

“[It’s] really hard to pick a favorite. I really do love “Wicked Game” but then I also love the “Fix You” piece I did for my mother. [“Fix You”] is so personal to me, and I was so young when I choreographed that. I was 23 and that got me nominated for my first Emmy,” Wall said.

When asked what inspires Wall to present such personal choreography to the world, Wall explained that he is always striving to convey real emotion. “It’s a way of releasing emotion. Especially if it comes from some place, it requires a certain movement. Sometimes it can require a story, sometimes I’ll make up a story. I try to do a little bit of everything, where I’ll make or write a story, and I’ll really portray what’s happening and it’s more real that way. It’s something that’s really happened and that’s really true,” Wall explained to uInterview.

It’s no surprise, then, that fans are constantly telling him, “You made me cry,” when they finally meet him. It’s a compliment Wall embraces: “People are very vulnerable when they watch dance, which is great because I guess that means we’re doing a good job. It’s so beautiful that you can be affected by something by just watching somebody. That’s really beautiful.”

Shaping Sound

Wall has earned a total of four Emmy nominations – three for his work on SYTYCD and one for Dancing With The Stars – and has founded his own dance company, Shaping Sound. Wall told uInterview that Shaping Sound is currently gearing up for their fall tour, and he couldn’t be more excited.

“We’re going to about 40 cities and you definitely want to see us on the road. The cast is ridiculous. It’s going to be spectacular, and it’s going to be the best one yet, so we are so excited to perform,” Wall told uInterview.
