'Transformers: Age Of Extinction' Review Roundup: Michael Bay's Latest Bot Installment Slammed By Critics

Transformers: Age of Extinction, the fourth movie in Michael Bay’s blockbuster franchise, picks up four years after the Autobots and Decepticons left Chicago a city in ruins.

Replacing Shia LaBeouf as the primary human protagonist, Mark Wahlberg plays Texan robotics inventor Cade Yeager. While working on an old semi-truck, Cade discovers that the vehicle is an injured Optimus Prime. His discovery brings the government, which wishes to take down all transformers, to his doorstep. What ensues is a battle with Cade’s team of Autobots against a dangerous group that wants unrestrained control over the world.

Transformers Reviews

Critics have panned what could be the start of a second Transformers trilogy. Though the series has always weathered its fair share of criticism, this latest effort has been dubbed the worst. Not only are there endless battle scenes, but the loud sequences bored reviewers. At over two and a half hours, Transformers was deemed far too long with far too little to entertain.

“It’s long, it’s loud and it’s really stupid. It’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, the regrettable fourth installment in Michael Bay’s movie series of Hasbro’s robot alien toy franchise. […] This is a series far drawn out past its shelf life, and the unsubtle hints at a fifth Transformers film only underlines this movie’s many offences. As a character says all too knowingly, something Bay should take to heart: ‘Tank’s empty, bro.’” – Peter Howell, The Toronto Star

“Michael Bay has done the impossible. With Transformers: Age of Extinction, the start of a – everyone duck! – second trilogy in his metalhead franchise, the Bay-man has made the worst and most worthless Transformers movie yet. I know, hard to believe, right? How could any summer blockbuster be as dull, dumb and soul-sucking as the first three Transformers movies? Step right up.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“Three-fourths of the way through the punishing 165-minute runtime – and fifteen minutes after my seatmate took off her 3-D glasses in exhaustion – my brain left my body, crying out as it fled, "How could a space robot riding a fire-breathing metal T. rex be so boring?" Enduring the longest, loudest, laziest entry in the franchise takes the Zen calm of someone who needs nothing more from a day at the movies than a jumbo popcorn.” – Amy Nicholson, LA Weekly

“Transformers: Age of Extinction begins with a hint of hope as dinosaurs screech and clatter over a nascent Earth abundant with life. Alas, moments later, prehistoric robots wipe out the reptiles — and any whiff of life in Michael Bay's latest temple of excess and ego. Deafening, deadening and about two hours too long, would mark the weakest installment yet of the 7-year-old Hasbro franchise — if the previous three movies were discernible from one another.” – Scott Bowles, USA Today

Transformers: Age of Extinction, rated PG-13, is currently in wide release. Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Stanley Tucci star.
