Tracy Morgan gave his first formal interview since the car wreck that nearly cost him his life, and nearly broke down crying with emotion.

Tracy Morgan Cries In Interview

Morgan broke his silence Monday morning to talk about the car crash that left him severely injured and took the life of his friend and fellow comic James McNair in an interview with Today’s Matt Lauer.

“I can’t believe I’m here. I can’t believe I’m in front of you,” he told Lauer. “I can’t believe I’m just here, and just seeing the tragedy that happened. It touches me.”

Morgan suffered a broken leg, a number of broken bones and severe brain trauma in the June 2014 accident on the New Jersey Turnpike when his limo bus was rear-ended by a Walmart truck. McNair was the lone fatality, but two others, like Morgan, were seriously injured in the crash. In the months since the accident, Morgan has had a slow recovery.

“There are times where I have my good day and my bad days, where I forget things,” he said. “There are times where I get the headaches, and the nose bleeds. I won’t even let my lady know because I don’t want her to be worried about it.”

Though Morgan continues to have memory lapses and is walking with a cane, the 30 Rock alum does plan to return to comedy and acting as soon as he is able.

“I love comedy. I’ll never stop loving her. I love comedy and I can’t wait to get back to her, but right now my goal is just to heal and get better because I’m not 100 percent yet, I’m not,” Morgan said. “And when I’m there, you’ll know it. I’ll get back to making you laugh. I promise you.”
