Tracy Chapman Sues Nicki Minaj For Copyright Infringement

Rapper Nicki Minaj landed in hot water over her song “Sorry.”

Minaj was sued for copyright infringement by folk singer Tracy Chapman. Chapman claims the song “Sorry” incorporates the lyrics and vocal melody from her song “Baby, Can I Hold You” without permission.

The suit claims that Minaj reached out in June 2018 about using the song, but Chapman denied the request. That request came after Minaj had already recorded the song for her album Queen.

However, “Sorry” didn’t make the final cut for Queen, which released in August.

According to Chapman’s suit, Minaj provided a copy of the song to HOT 97, a hip-hop radio station. Chapman claims the DJ then played the song on air and promoted it on his social media accounts.

Minaj has yet to respond to the claims. The suit does make mention of a now-deleted tweet by Minaj. That tweet details her debating whether to keep the song and move the album release date or to lose the song and keep the date.
