Toyota released a fun new commercial to coincide with the arrival of Oct. 21, the date in the ‘future’ Marty McFly and Emmett “Doc” Brown travelled to in Back To The Future: Part 2.
In it actors Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd have a little reunion and argue about whether today’s technology has caught up with some of the movie’s more outlandish predictions.
Check out the video below.
The video also features the boys getting schooled on sustainable fuel technology and the Toyota Mirai — a hydrogen fuel cell electric car — by aeromechanics engineer Mischa Pollack and features some great throwback references to the original trilogy.
The trio hops in a Toyota (unfortunately not the famous DeLorean) to see some of the settings for scenes from the movies. They take a trip to the Los Angeles setting for McFly’s home and Whittier Union High — the setting for Hill Valley High — collecting garbage from trash cans as they go and turning it into fuel.
The ad compares Toyota’s groundbreaking technology to Doc Brown’s “Mr. Fusion home energy reactor” seen in Back to the Future Part II. In the film, Doc uses trash to power his time machine’s “flux capacitor” and Toyota is keen to show fans that what was once a dream for the future is now a reality.
The Toyota version is fun but there’s nothing like the real thing. To remind yourself of Doc’s original time-travelling motor-machine check out the video below.
