A Taiwanese tourist in Australia walked straight off a pier because she was preoccupied checking Facebook on her phone.
The woman was walking along St Kilda’s pier when she checked her Facebook page and ended up falling into Port Phillip Bay on the night of Monday, Dec. 16. According to reports, the woman remained floating on her back in the water until she was rescued by police 20 minutes later. She told authorities that she doesn’t know how to swim, and so, stayed in the water.
“She was still out in the water laying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn’t swim,” said Senior Constable Dean Kelly.
She reportedly apologized during her rescue, saying, “I was checking my Facebook page on the phone and I’ve fallen in.”
The woman never let go of her phone. She was rushed to the hospital after her rescue for observation, but is completely fine. Authorities are hoping this woman’s story serves as a reminder to the public to be more aware of their surroundings while using various electronic devices.
