Rapper Tory Lanez was handcuffed in court on Tuesday and later taken into custody when it was revealed that he violated a protective order established by a judge during his assault trial regarding his alleged shooting of fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Lanez was handcuffed mid-trial because Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford found “sufficient evidence that he violated the order of protection,” according to Megan Thee Stallion’s attorney. He was released later that day on bail.

He is forbidden from contacting or otherwise harassing Megan, but several of the rapper’s tweets were determined to be messages meant for her, and he was also accused of advising other accounts that have been posting tweets downplaying his role in the attack. Lanez has denied this involvement. The now-deleted tweet claimed that his DNA was not found on the weapon used to shoot Megan in the foot, and Lanez’s own lawyer Shawn Holley had to clarify that DNA testing on the handgun is not conclusive and doesn’t fully implicate nor exonerate Lanez.

Megan and her legal team are accusing Lanez of firing a handgun at her as she was exiting an SUV in Hollywood in the summer of 2020. Lanez was eventually first charged in October 2020 and his trial has been dragging on ever since. Last December, Megan took a moment to blast media coverage of the trial, saying news outlets attempted to “paint it as a catfight between friends,” and also added, “why do I have to relive this on the internet every day?”
