Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Seeking Help For Alcohol Abuse, Puts Reelection Campaign On Hold

Rob Ford, the embattled Toronto mayor, will seek help for alcohol abuse and temporarily step away from campaigning for reelection after it was revealed that a new incriminating video had surfaced.

Rob Ford Heads To Rehab

Ford was allegedly captured on camera Saturday evening smoking a substance out of a pipe that the recorder – and purported drug dealer – claims is crack cocaine, reported CNN. Although no news organizations have published the video, which the dealer is supposedly looking to sell for six figures, it’s taken its toll on Ford.

"It's not easy to be vulnerable and this is one of the most difficult times in my life," Ford said in a statement Wednesday. "I have a problem with alcohol, and the choices I have made while under the influence. I have struggled with this for some time."

"Today, after taking some time to think about my own well-being, how to best serve the people of Toronto and what is in the best interests of my family, I have decided to take a leave from campaigning and from my duties as mayor to seek immediate help," Ford said.

Ford & Crack Cocaine

Ford was first accused of smoking crack cocaine in May of last year when a cell phone video of the politician surfaced. Throughout the investigation, Ford attempted to maintain his innocence despite mounting evidence that he dabbled in illicit drugs and likely had a problem with alcohol. By November, the volume of calls for Ford to resign was deafening, and yet, he held onto his post. However, the city council managed to strip him of a number of his mayoral duties and power.

Although his image has taken a beating, Ford opted to seek another term as Toronto’s mayor. While making the announcement that he’d seek help for his substance abuse Wednesday, Ford did not suggest that it meant the end of his run for the city’s highest office.
