Tori Spelling Shares When She Got Her First Period At 14 – And Her Mom Made Her Wear ‘A Diaper’

Reality star Tori Spelling, 51, recounted how she navigated her first period while on a summer trip to Las Vegas.

Spelling, a mother of five, openly discussed the emotions and challenges she faced as a 14-year-old at the time. She described the excitement she felt about her “teeny weeny metallic gold bikini” while on vacation with her friends, only to have her plans disrupted by the unexpected arrival of her first period in an episode of her iHeartRadio podcast misSPELLING.

Spelling remembered that her mother, Candy Spelling, immediately suggested they get “feminine products.” Spelling’s friend recommended a tampon so they could still swim, but Candy didn’t approve. “She was like, ‘Well, when I was a girl and this happened, and my mom got this for me, a belt.’ I was like, what?” Spelling said.

She revealed the embarrassment and discomfort she experienced, as her mother insisted on providing her with an “archaic” product – a “snap-on elastic belt” that Spelling likened to “a goddamn diaper.” The actress described the humiliation she felt as her friend “hysterically laughed” at the bulky, conspicuous contraption. Spelling compared the bulge to “a penis” and said it looked as if she were wearing “a chastity belt.” Eventually, she was able to trim the pad down with a razor.

She remembered, “What a fun Vegas experience. But I’ll never forget it. I didn’t go in the pool for, like, a week.”

Spelling’s willingness to openly share this intimate experience highlights the importance of normalizing discussions around menstrual health and the need for more inclusive and accessible menstrual care products.

Spelling recently revealed that she has used the weight-loss drug Ozempic and had her first boob job when she was 19. These are two body alterations that women have historically been pressured to feel ashamed of doing. Through her candid nature, Spelling has not only provided a relatable narrative for countless women but has also contributed to the ongoing conversation about destigmatizing a woman’s right to autonomy and natural biological processes.
