Actress Tori Spelling is in hot water on social media, after posting a photo on her Instagram Story which some have called racist. Spelling, known for her playing Donna Martin on the television show Beverly Hills, 90210, had garnered praise on Instagram in late February. A month ago, Spelling made a detailed post opening up about the supposed bullying her children go through, which garnered sympathy and praise. However, just a few weeks later, Spelling was experiencing not praise but condemnation, and posted an apology to Instagram.
A number of people took a screen capture of both the photo and apology, allowing those who did not view it originally to see it for themselves.
Spelling posted a photo of her daughter Hattie with a bandana draped across her head and Cheetos stuck onto her fingers with rubber bands. “Days kept inside we have to get creative… Hattie has become McQuisha in her Cheeto extension nails.” Many found that Hattie’s costume was an offensive caricature of black women. Spelling wrote an apology a day later. “I posted a story the other day that upset many of you. I’m truly sorry,” began Spelling. She explained that she and Hattie often watch re-runs of the show Martin, and claimed that “McQuisha,” was a sendup the character of Shanaynay. “She is innocent and didn’t mean anything by it,” wrote Spelling.
