Tony Torrez, who allegedly killed a 4-year-old in a road rage shooting incident in Albuquerque, N.M., will remain behind bars.

Tony Torrez Staying Behind Bars

Torrez, 31, appeared in court for the first time on Thursday following his arrest in the shooting death of Lilly Garcia, reported the Albuquerque Journal. Metropolitan Court Judge Chris Schultz, who called the road rage shooting one of the “most wanton and atrocious acts in the history of this city,” opted to continue Torrez’s bond at $650,000 cash only.

“If members of the motoring public receive gunfire as a result of slights on the highway, I don’t know who is safe,” Schultz said during Torrez’s court appearance.

Schultz reasoned that Torrez’s behavior indicates that he’s a danger to the community. Furthermore, following past run-ins with the law, Torrez failed to appear for hearings, making him unreliable and a potential flight risk.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lilly’s father, Alan Garcia, had picked her and her 7-year-old brother up from school. On the way to the local grocery store, Torrez allegedly cut him off, causing Alan to swear at him. Torrez then allegedly fired multiple shots at Alan’s vehicle, one of which hit Lilly in the head, killing her.

Torrez, who was arrested Wednesday, confessed to the shooting. He is charged with an open count of murder, child abuse resulting in death and several other charges.
