Tony Stewart will reportedly not face charges for running over Kevin Ward Jr. on a dirt track last month, causing the young driver’s tragic death.
A grand jury has cleared Stewart of all potential criminal charges in relation to Ward’s death, reported The New York Times. The enhanced video of the incident in August, while offering greater detail of the accident, did not convince the jury that Stewart is guilty of any wrongdoing. Orange County district attorney Michael Tantillo made the announcement about the grand jury’s findings this afternoon.
While a criminal trial against Stewart will not be pursued, the NASCAR driver could still face a civil suit.
On Aug. 9, Stewart and Ward were racing against one another at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. During the race in the Empire Super Sprints series, Stewart clipped Ward's car, sending him into a wall. Unhurt but enraged, Ward proceded to exit his vehicle, yelling and gesticulating as Stewart's car made its way back around the track. Driver Chuck Hebing managed to avoid striking Ward, but Stewart unfortunately made contact with the 20-year-old driver.
Following the accident, Ward was rushed to a local hospital, but died of his injuries before he arrived at the facility. His cause of death was ruled blunt force trauma by the coroner.
Stewart, who has apologized to Ward's family and expressed his sadness about the incident, returned to racing less than a month afterwards after skipping three successive races.
