Tom Petty Is Dead After Suffering Cardiac Arrest

Rock star Tom Petty died after he was rushed to the hospital Sunday after going into cardiac arrest.

Petty was placed on life support at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital.

The “Free Fallin'” singer was found unconscious and not breathing in his home in Malibu.

Ben Jacobs of The Guardian tweeted on Monday afternoon that TMZ reported Petty had been taken off life support:

Petty — a Florida native and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer known for several hits with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — recently finished a long North American tour that ended at the Hollywood Bowl late last Monday. The tour served to commemorate the nearly 40th anniversary of his band, which became famous in 1978 with

Among the Heartbreakers’ most famous songs are “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream” and “American Girl.”

Petty shared this old photo of him and actor/director Ed Burns on Twitter on Monday:

Petty also helped form the group the Traveling Wilburys in the late 1980s, a band that consisted of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. The legendary quintet recorded two albums.

Petty has won three Grammys and has been nominated 18 times.
