Tom Hanks made his final appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman and taught him how to use a Selfie Stick on the show.
Hanks, 58, appeared on the show – Letterman’s third to last show ever as the host of The Late Show – on Monday, May 18, and asked “Hey, can I take a selfie?” And before Letterman could answer, Hanks took out his phone and his selfie stick.
Letterman laughed, grabbing the selfie stick and likening it to a golf club. Hanks explained the selfie stick to Letterman, joking, “They sell these all over Florence, which was the birth of the Renaissance.”
Letterman moved in close to Hanks, who struggled a bit mounting his camera onto the stick before instructing the talk show host on how to take the best possible photo – “Get it up above the chin – above the chin!”
“That’s a beauty,” Letterman said after reviewing the photo.
The two continued to banter, with Hanks suggesting Letterman take a selfie stick with him as he enjoys his retirement.
“It’s almost like someone else has just taken the picture for you,” Letterman mused.
“Which will work for you, Dave, because it will mean you’ve been on vacation with a friend,” Hanks hit back, surprising the comedian.
David Letterman will end his thirty-year run on late night television on Wednesday, May 20, when he will host his final episode of The Late Show with David Letterman. Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report will take over hosting duties on Sept. 8.
