Tom Hanks has revealed more about the battle he and his wife, Rita Wilson, faced against the coronavirus (COVID-19).
“Rita went through a tougher time than I did,” Hanks said on The National Defense Radio Show on Sunday. “She had a much-higher fever and she had some other symptoms. She lost her sense of taste and smell. She got absolutely no joy from food for a better part of three weeks.”
Hanks added that Wilson “was so nauseous, she had to crawl on the floor from the bed to the facilities.”
Earlier this month, Wilson told CBS This Morning host Gayle King about the extreme side-effects she felt when taking the anti-malaria drug chloroquine.
“I was completely nauseous and I had vertigo,” Wilson said. “I could not walk and my muscles felt very weak. I think people have to be very considerate about that drug. We don’t know if it’s helpful in this case.”
Hanks recalled the struggle he felt trying to do a short workout. “I just tried to do basic stretches and exercises on the floor and I couldn’t even get halfway through,” he had told a nurse.
“And she looked at me through her glasses like she was talking to the dumbest human being,” he joked. “And she said, ‘You have COVID-19.’”
The pair, who are both 63, had to stay in “lockdown for three days” at the hospital before they were allowed to quarantine elsewhere in Australia for two weeks. They have since recovered and returned home to Los Angeles, and Hanks even hosted the first Saturday Night Live from home earlier this month.
“Ever since being diagnosed, I have been more like America’s dad than ever before, since no one wants to be around me anymore and I make people uncomfortable,” he joked in his monologue.
