SNL sketch 'Black Jeopardy' with Tom Hanks as a MAGA supporter (Image: NBC)
Tom Hanks has come under fire for his portrayal of a Trump supporter during Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special.
During the episode, Hanks reprised his role as Doug, a MAGA hat-wearing contestant on Black Jeopardy! alongside Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Eddie Murphy.
Originally introduced in 2016, the character satirized both the contrasts and similarities between Trump supporters and Black culture. However, this latest performance did not sit well with some conservative viewers.
MAGA supporters took to social media to criticize the skit, arguing that it reinforced outdated stereotypes. “Trump won the popular vote. This tired trope that MAGA is racist is disgusting. SNL is an unfunny show for snobbish liberal elites,” wrote former RFK Jr. aide Link Lauren on X. Another user called the portrayal “tired and pathetic,” accusing SNL of focusing on political agendas instead of humor.
Critics also pointed out that the sketch reused elements from Hanks’ original performance, making it feel “forced” and “awkward.” One commenter noted, “The handshake/recoil gag was already done in the first MAGA sketch. This one felt like a repeat.”
Beyond the sketch, Hanks also stirred conversation when he and wife Rita Wilson dramatically exited SNL 50: The Concert at Radio City Music Hall. In a staged bit, they stormed out after host Jimmy Fallon announced that no awards would be given out that night.
Despite the backlash, Hanks remains one of SNL’s most iconic hosts. Reflecting on his first hosting gig in 1985, he called it “the single most exciting thing that has happened in my career,” adding that it was “a fantasy made real.”

It's sad to see Tom Hanks debase himself this way. Sadly, he lacked the inner purpose to keep his dignity into old age, and ended up flattering himself that his good fortune in life entitles him to look down on others. What will he be remembered for now? Being a bitter old man, mocking those who aren't blessed with the privileges and wealth he was fortunate enough to enjoy. What miserable, despicable, little man.
