Tom Hanks, COVID-19 Survivor, Questions Patriotism People Who Refuse To Wear Masks: ‘Are They Americans?’

Tom Hanks who was diagnosed with and recovered from COVID-19 in March, is questioning Americans who refuse to wear masks and follow guidance from health officials.

On Tuesday night during Hanks’s appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Hanks asked “Are they Americans,” referring to people who refuse to wear masks. “I don’t get it,” the actor said.

Hanks was in Australia for the filming of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, when he and his wife, Rita Wilson, quarantined themselves and were then diagnosed with the coronavirus. Hanks described his experience saying his bones “felt like they were made of soda crackers.”

Since many states re-opened, they are now struggling to contain spiking COVID-19 cases as some Americans continue to congregate in large crowds and refuse to wear masks in public. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) recently re-closed all indoor bars and restaurants due to the surge of infections, for example.

Hanks continued to say, “Honestly, if you drive a car, you think it’s your constitutional right not to use your turn signals? You should use your turn signals ’cause otherwise you might run into somebody, somebody might run into you, right? You want to obey some aspect of the speed limit, right? You don’t want to go 120 miles an hour in a school zone. You slow down, right? You try not to hit buildings and pedestrians. You give that a shot, don’t yah? Isn’t that the least you can do when you’re driving a car? I think the least you can do in the United States of America and around the world is wear a mask, wash your hands, and keep your distance. Holy smokes!”
