Tom Cruise owned the Cannes red carpet on Wednesday afternoon, easily commanding the kind of attention that only the iconic actor can wield.

Cruise, along with fellow cast and crew, walked the red carpet at the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 14 in Cannes, France, for their film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

The last time he walked the red carpet at Cannes, Cruise was accompanied by Kate Middleton and Prince William.

The Cannes Film Festival is the ultimate prestige event, with features like a live DJ and orchestra of musicians serenading the crowd with the franchise’s iconic theme as they entered the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

Guests of the night packed into the theater wearing black tie and formal evening attire. They were expected to adhere to a new dress code that was updated just this week, forbidding “voluminous outfits” and “nudity.” Some celebs like Heidi Klum ignored this latest decision, whereas others like Halle Berry rushed to make the necessary changes.

During one of the movie’s most memorable underwater scenes, Cruise went shirtless for filming

While some viewers found the film’s staggering 2 hours and 49 minutes of running time too long-winded, with a few guests even leaving the screening early, most of the crowd loved every minute, giving an impressive standing ovation to the movie’s conclusion until the cast took the mics.

“This response is why we do it. You are why we do it. The big screen experience is why we do it,” Director Christopher McQuarrie said. “Thank you all for being here and for supporting us.”

“To be here in Cannes and have these moments—I mean, as a kid when we were growing up, I really can’t even dream of something like this happening,” Cruise said when given the mic. “I think McQ said it all. I’m just very grateful for 30 years to be able to entertain you with this franchise.”
You can catch Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning in theaters in North America on May 23.
