Cruise reprises his action hero role as Ethan Hunt in the fifth Mission: Impossible film alongside returning co-stars Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner. In the newly released trailer, Cruise appears back in super spy shape, starring in impressive fight sequences and performing crazy stunts. The crazy stunt that has everybody talking is one featured in the trailer that had Cruise dangling from an airplane mid-flight.
“The Most Dangerous Thing I’ve Ever Done”
Cruise, 52, insists that he performed the stunt himself – much to the chagrin of the filmmakers. “That’s me the whole time. I was standing right over the tires when we landed. It’s nerve-racking for everyone else, but pretty exciting for me,” Cruise told reporters.
In fact, Cruise not only performed the stunt, it was his idea. “I knew I wanted to have an airplane sequence. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. As a kid I remember flying on an airplane and thinking: ‘what would it be like out on the wing or on the side of the airplane?!’” Cruise said.
In the last Mission: Impossible installment, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Cruise sat on top of the world’s tallest building, so first-time Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie had to be a bit more creative to top that stunt. “As dangerous as the Burj Khalifa was [in M:I 4] – and it was incredibly dangerous – the Burj Khalifa was static. And here you’re moving at such high speeds. If a bird hit him at that sort of a speed, that would have been it,” McQuarrie said.
Cruise, who went down the runway and up into the air eight times to get the final shot, admitted that it was the most dangerous stunt he’s ever performed. “It’s the most dangerous thing I’ve ever done to be honest….Motorcycle scenes are dangerous because I can’t wear pads and I don’t wear a helmet. I’m going at high speeds and anything can happen. But I’m in control on a motorcycle… I can put the breaks on,” Cruise said. “But outside the airplane there’s so many factors. Just too many things can happen. You don’t want to do it. Once we had it, it was ‘We’re not doing it anymore,’” Cruise admitted. Mission Impossible Rogue Nation will be released in theaters July 31.
