Tom Cruise has confirmed a Top Gun sequel is in the near future.
Cruise, the star of the original 1986 film, verified the long-rumored sequel during an interview with the Australian morning show Sunrise. “It’s true,” he said multiple times. “We’re gonna start filming probably in the next year… It is definitely happening.”
The 54-year-old star has done plenty of action movies as of late and loves doing his own stunts, so this sequel does not come as a surprise from the Mission Impossible frontman.
The original Top Gun sees Cruise play Maverick, a cocky Navy pilot who falls in love with his instructor Charlotte Blackwood. This film, coupled with 1983’s Risky Business, fueled Cruise into stardom. Unfortunately, the film’s director Tony Scott killed himself in 2012.
Top Gun earned multiple Oscar nominations and walked away with a statue for Best Original Song, for love ballad “Take My Breath Away” by Giorgio Morodor and Tom Whitlock, performed by Berlin.
Last week, Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted out a photo of himself and Cruise for the 31st anniversary of the original film. Perhaps this was to fuel more rumors about the upcoming sequel before the announcement. In addition, Bruckheimer tweeted something similar back in January 2016, saying “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.” It appears that conversation has finally come to fruition.
