Titanic Hoax: Loraine Allison’s Claim Of Being Survivor Disproved

A woman’s claim that she had been a survivor of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic has been debunked.

DNA testing has confirmed that claims made by Hellen Loraine Kramer were a hoax, reported Newsmax. In life, Kramer alleged that she was Loraine Allison, a 2-year-old who was thought to have perished with her mother when the Titanic went under. According to legend, Loraine Allison had been safely aboard a lifeboat with her mother Bess when Bess pulled Loraine out of the boat to find her husband, who she believed was boarding a lifeboat on the other side of the ship, reported the Montreal Daily Star. In the end, none of the Allison’s were thought to have survived.

In the 1940s, Kramer came forward, claiming to be Loraine Allison. Then living in Detroit, Kramer stated that not only did she survive the tragic sinking, but was taken into the care of Titanic architect Thomas Andrews, who’d given her the alias Mr. Hyde. She said she learned of Mr. Hyde’s true identity only upon his deathbed.

“The story just gets more fantastical,” forensic scientist Tracy Oost, told the Ottawa Citizen. “Consequently, I don’t think a lot of people really believed it.”

“Despite that, it’s persisted since 1940. People want to believe that a sweet little girl didn’t die on the Titanic,” she said, adding, “Just like people want to believe a czarina [Anastasia] wasn’t brutally murdered with her family [The Romanovs].”

Conducted in December of last year, DNA testing has now unequivocally proven that Kramer was not Loraine Allison. DNA from Kramer’s granddaughters and that of a grandniece of Bess Allison were used in the testing.

Why Kramer chose to impersonate a casualty of the shipwreck remains a mystery.
