Tim Lincecum, the struggling San Francisco Giants pitcher, stunned the San Diego Padres and his own squad after pitching a no-hitter on Saturday, leading the Giants to a 9-0 win.
Lincecum, who is a two-time Cy Young Award winner, has been in a season-long slump. He hadn't won a game since June 4, and hasn’t come out on top on the road since April 3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But on Saturday, “The Freak” threw 148 pitches, striking out 13, walking four and hitting a batter.
When a Padres batter connected on a pitch, Lincecum’s teammates were there to make the big plays to keep his no-hitter alive. Hunter Pence made a diving catch on an Alexi Amarista liner to end the eighth inning. When Padres pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman hit a deep grounder behind third base, Pablo Sandoval threw him out.
After the final out of the game, catcher Buster Posey lifted Lincecum up in a bear hug, before the rest of his teammates rushed the mound to give him a water cooler bath. Gregor Blanco, who caught the final out of the night, handed him the final ball of his first career no-hitter.
Lincecum’s no-hitter was the 15th in Giants history, and their seventh since the move to San Francisco for the 1958 season.
