Tim Curry, star of the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, appeared on the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour to advertise Fox’s ‘Rocky Horror’ remake.
Curry, 70, famously played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the original, and fans were skeptical about seeing the character played by anybody other than Curry himself. When asked directly if he gives his “unequivocal blessing,” Curry responded positively.
Though not in his original role, Curry will play a part in the new film: the part of narrator. “I actually offered myself as Dr. Scott, because I was already in a wheelchair,” he says. “They thought narrator was a better fit.”
Kenny Ortega, the remake’s producer and director, handled the classic film’s cult status very carefully. Given the immense following the ’75 flick and the widespread audience participation in theaters, Ortega wanted to make sure the fans play a part in the film as well. “When we shot the film, we filled a theater with fans and we tried many things,” he said. “We found a way to balance the callbacks into the arc of the storytelling.”
Transgender actress Laverne Cox will star in Curry’s place as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, alongside Adam Lambert as Eddie, famously portrayed by Meat Loaf. Victoria Justice and Ryan McCartan will reprise the roles of Janet and Brad, respectively.
Rocky Horror Picture Show airs on Fox on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 8 pm ET/PT.
