On Tuesday, millions of Instagram and Twitter users participated in “Blackout Tuesday,” a social media trend that called for justice for the late George Floyd. Tiffany Trump joined this trend by posting an all-black square on her Instagram account.
She captioned her post with a quote by Helen Keller, “Alone we can achieve so little; together we can achieve so much.” Tiffany also used the hashtags #blackoutTuesday and #justiceforgeorgefloyd.
Many people who participated in “Blackout Tuesday,” like Tiffany, posted all black squares to show solidarity against police brutality of black people. However, activists warned users against tagging their posts with the hashtag #blacklivesmatter because the millions of black squares were pushing down important updates found by the hashtag.
Blackout Tuesday was started by people in the music industry in an effort to acknowledge the industry has profited from, but not given back to the black community. Celebrities and public figures alike participated in the trend.
