Actresses Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph presented the Oscars for Documentary (Short Subject) and Live Action Short Film and joked about the trending “Oscars So White” hashtag.
Last year, the Academy Awards were chastised for honoring mostly white people with nominations, with many dubbing it with #OscarsSoWhite. This year, however, many more people of color were recognized in various categories. Daniel Kaluuya and Denzel Washington were up for the Best Actor award, while Mary J. Blige and Octavia Spencer were nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Jordan Peele‘s directorial debut Get Out earned four nominations, winning one for Best Original Screenplay.
When Haddish and Rudolph took the stage, they joked that some people might fear that the show has become #OscarsSoBlack. “A few years ago, people were saying that Oscars were so white, and since then some real progress has been made,” the Saturday Night Live alum stated.

“But when we came out here, we knew some of you were thinking, are the Oscars too black now?” jumped in Haddish to laughter.
“We just want to say, don’t worry,” Rudolph added. “There are so many more white people to come tonight.”
They pair went on to talk about the majority white people backstage, and not even actor and celebrities. “There are white people walking around with headsets, white people with clipboards,” said Haddish. “I’m personally not a fan of white people with clipboards because I’m always wondering, ‘what are they writing down about me?'”
The jokes continued to fly until Rudolph reminded everyone that they were there to announce two Oscars, and handed the statues out to Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405 for Documentary (Short Subject) and to The Silent Child for Live Action Short Film.
