Netflix released a teaser trailer for Jonathan Larson’s biographical movie Tick, Tick… Boom!
The main character Jon, who is a theater composer waiting tables in a New York City diner, will be portrayed by Andrew Garfield. While working as a waiter in the 90s, Jon also spends his time writing a musical.
Tick, Tick… Boom! was originally written by Larson and shows Jon’s journey to showcasing his work. Jon’s girlfriend, Susan (Alexandra Shipp), dreams of becoming an artist and leaving New York City. His friend Michael (Robin de Jesús) lets go of his creative dreams in order to live a financially stable life.
The film will be directed by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Larson revolutionized the musical theater industry with his Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rent. Larson was not able to witness the success of his musical due to his death, which was caused by an aortic aneurysm on the day of Rent’s first off-Broadway preview.
The movie will also star Joshua Henry, Mj Rodriguez, Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, Judith Light and Vanessa Hudgens.
“Tick, Tick… Boom! is a corner of the world I know from every angle. I know what it’s like to be a struggling songwriter. I know what it is to be in your 20s writing that one musical, what it’s like to be in New York with a bunch of friends with artistic dreams and then watch them drop off one by one, to real life while you’re still hanging on. It’s a story of doubling down on your craft in the face of impossible odds, which is not unique to musical theater – it’s the struggle of any artist trying to make a living doing the thing they love,” Miranda said in a statement.
The film will be available in select theatres and Netflix this fall.
