A 22-year-old man in Wicker Park, Chicago, has been arrested after allegedly killing and torturing several kittens in June.
The man has been identified as Thomas Martel, who turned himself in on Monday after police received a complaint from a woman about a man abusing animals.
Martel has now been arrested and is charged with six felonies, including two counts of animal torture and four counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
Officials located a dead kitten in a plastic bag after they searched Martel’s apartment. In addition to this, Martel confessed to drowning and squeezing two of the cats to death and mutilating the third. These deaths occurred across three weeks from June 4 to June 23.
He gave all the cats the same name, Shelly.
The woman who complained about him to the police reportedly told them that one of the kittens had been microwaved.

The report showed that Martel was taking medications for his serious mental illnesses. He checked the “yes” box when answering whether he had mental health issues.
Martel’s bail has special conditions set by the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. These conditions ensure that Martel will not be allowed to have any contact with any animals and he will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device, which the Cook County sheriff will oversee.
