The Weeknd, Justin Beiber, Nicki Minaj and Teyana Taylor have all taken to Twitter in outrage over the Grammy’s alleged “corruption.” This comes after many stars were not nominated for the award, despite critical acclaim and huge sales, while others alleged miscategorization of their music.
Minaj was the first to express her outrage about being snubbed via a scathing tweet that accused the Grammy committee of having a racial bias. The “Pink Friday” rapper wrote, “Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation, ” Minaj tweeted. “They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.”
The Weeknd was also overlooked despite the performance of his After Hours album. The singer followed Minaj’s lead and made his own accusations of corruption. “The Grammys remain corrupt,” he tweeted. “You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…”
Taylor and Bieber also raised their own issues regarding the committee’s selection. Tayler felt that much female music talent was left underrepresented in the list of nominees and tweeted a list of singers she thought deserved recognition: “Brandy. H.E.R. Kehlani. Summer Walker. Victoria Monet. Jhene. JoJo. Ari Lenox. SZA. Tinashe. The list goes on and on. But know, you are loved and appreciated over here. Goodnight.”
Bieber expressed dissatisfaction with his latest album being labeled pop. “I set out to make an R&B album,” he wrote on Instagram. “Changes was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album, which is very strange to me.”
