When The Walking Dead returned Sunday night, it opened with Morgan carrying forth through the fields, looking for Carol.
Passing a sign that reads, “You are alive,” Morgan (Lennie James) comes upon a saddled horse. While he mounts it, the lone surviving Savior from Carol’s (Melissa McBride) highway massacre is still out looking for her. Somehow, Morgan ends up finding Carol first, but she’s wounded. Thankfully, it wasn’t a walker. Morgan wants to take her back to Alexandria and get her some medical help, but Carol isn’t interested. In the morning, Morgan tells Carol that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) had come out looking for her as well. He explains that she has to go back home because of how much they all care for her and how much she cares for them. “If you don’t want to kill, or if you can’t, then you have to get away from them. you do not get both,” Carol tells Morgan. “You, you should know that.” She then demands that he go, and even pulls a gun on him.
When Morgan goes out for a bit, Carol takes the opportunity to leave unnoticed. On his way to find her again, he comes across Carol’s rosary. Carol, meanwhile, is struggling with her injury, and just barely manages to fend off a zombie. Just has she’s stabbed it in the head, she’s tackled by the Savior that survived her massacre. He informs her that he intends to spend his last breaths giving her a slow and painful death. His first shot is in her arm. After he shoots her once more, he decides to walk away from her. Just as he turns around, deciding to kill her after all, Morgan arrives and kills him. Morgan then encounters two armored men who agree to help Carol.
Back in Alexandria, Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), Eugene (Josh McDermitt), and Aaron (Ross Marquand) are packing up to go with Rick to the hilltop with Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who might be having problems with her pregnancy. They need to get Maggie to a doctor. Carl (Chandler Riggs) is going with the group as well but tries to dissuade Enid (Katelyn Nacon) from going too. She puts up a fight so, Carl tells her to grab pistols from the closet, but then locks her inside of it.
Out in the woods, a man is being beaten by a band of Saviors. They drag the guy into the middle of the road and wait. Rick, who is leaving Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) in charge of Alexandria’s defense, encounters the Saviors and the man they mean to sacrifice to teach them a lesson. Rick suggests that they make a deal, but the only deal they want to make involves taking all of their stuff and killing someone in the process.
The gang takes off again in the RV, in need of a new route, which Eugene finds. At the wheel, with Sasha in the passenger seat, Abraham asks her what she’d think about having a baby. The poignant moment is short-lived, however, as they soon meet another Savior roadblock. Instead of confronting the Saviors, they back away. The next road block they come to is a chain of zombies. One has a few of Michonne’s dreadlocks attached to it, another has a pair of Daryl’s arrows in its chest. Before they can process what that could mean, gunfire sprays down from above. Rick manages to break the chain as Sasha returns fire, and they all make it back into the RV and through the downed roadblock. In the back of the RV, Maggie’s health is rapidly deteriorating.
Eventually, they come to a massive stack of logs that the Saviors set fire to, once again blocking their way. The ways of getting through to the hilltop are few. Eugene offers to go off to siphon some gas and do a sacrificial mission into the Saviors. In case he doesn’t make it back, he gives Rick his recipe to make bullets. Thinking they’ve outsmarted the Saviors, Rick and the rest walk through the woods with Maggie on a stretcher, believing in just two more miles they’ll have her safely at the hilltop. Instead, they end up on a road surrounded by dozens of Saviors, and find Eugene down on his knees.
The Saviors strip them of all of their weapons and make them join him on their knees. Dwight then drags out Daryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) from a van. Emerging from the RV is Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). He wants to know who the leader is, and tells Rick he’s not happy with how many of his people he’s killed. “You are so going to regret crossing me in a few minutes,” he tells him. “Yes you are.” Negan goes on to explain that the new world order is that they give him half of their stuff, whatever they have, or get killed. He further explains that he doesn’t want to kill them because he wants them to work for him – but that he’s going to have to beat one of them, likely to death, with his bat, Lucille.
Unable to chose which one to beat to death, Negan does eeny, meeny, miny, moe. After landing on one member of the group, he starts the bludgeoning. Before the victim is revealed, the screen faded to black, leaving the death a mystery until The Walking Dead returns for its seventh season.
