‘The Walking Dead’ Recap: Rick Exiles Carol; Michonne Levels With Tyreese

The Walking Dead continued to delve into the complexities of Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) conscience, most recently in light of the revelation that Carol (Melissa McBride) is the one who set fire to Karen (Melissa Ponzio) and David in an effort to protect the community.

In “Indifference,” Rick wakes up from a nightmare where his longtime comrade Carol puts down the beloved Maggie (Lauren Cohen). Instead of heading straight into a confrontation with Carol, Rick asks her to join him and his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) on a supply run. Before she sets off with Rick and Carl, Carol says goodbye to the young girl she’s since taken under her wing. She tries to reassure Lizzie that she’ll recover from the flu, and gives her a quick refresher on her survival skills. When she goes to leave, Lizzie calls her “mom”; Carol instructs her never to do so again.

The unlikely trio targets abandoned residential neighborhoods. In their search for supplies, they come across a couple plagued with injuries – but no bites. In an attempt to gain Rick’s trust and admittance into the prison group, the two go off to gather some useful items. Carol tries to persuade Rick to take up more of a leadership role again, and that being a farmer isn’t enough. Before the two new additions can return, Carol and Rick witness the girl getting eaten by a walker.

On the last supply run gone wrong, Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) are trying to make their way back to the prison. Tyreese’s ongoing rage concerning Karen’s death is making him reckless and a general hazard to the small group. Michonne is sick of his carrying on and tells him, “Anger makes you stupid. Stupid gets you killed.” Michonne also receives a bit of wisdom from Daryl, who convinces her that it’s time to stop thinking about tracking down the Governor (David Morrissey).

A stroke of luck finally sees the group come across a new vehicle that could see them back to the relative safety of the prison. While at the garage, Daryl learns from Bob that the only reason he’d traveled to the big box store was to get his hands on some booze. Daryl empathizes with him, but the goodwill is short-lived. Once again, after being the cause of the fellow newcomer’s death at Big Spot, Bob risks the lives of his comrades for a bottle of liquor. Daryl then duly reams him out.

Throughout their neighborhood scavenging, Rick and Carol engaged one another in vulnerable conversation about their losses and the trials of the apocalypse. When talk turns to Carol’s murders, she defends her actions to Rick once again, imploring him to understand that it was something he might have done as well. But Rick, putting the leader hat on that Carol was urging him to don again just moments before, informs Carol that he’s exiling her from the prison. He expresses confidence that she’ll find another group, but says simply, “I won’t have you there.”

The Walking Dead airs Sundays on AMC at 9/8c.
