'The Voice' Recap: Knockouts Part 1 – Adam, Gwen And Blake Try To Steal Taylor Phelan From Team Pharrell

Taylor Swift stepped in as advisor for the knockout rounds and Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine used up their steals on Monday night's episode of The Voice.

In the knockouts, contestants face off against another member of their team. Each performs a short solo, one after another, and then the coach declares a winner. Unlike the battles, these are not duets, and each coach only has one steal left.

Team Gwen: Sugar Joans vs. Bryana Salaz

Sugar Joans and Bryana Salaz of Team Gwen were the first knockout pair. Bryana chose to sing Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack,” and Taylor and Gwen advised her to connect emotionally to the song.

Sugar decided to do Beyoncé’s “Love On Top,” and had some trouble in rehearsals over-doing her signature growl.

Pharrell told Bryana that if she stays true to herself, she could have a career for “twenty plus years.” That said, he promised Sugar that, should she get eliminated from Team Gwen, he’d steal her. Both women gave great performances, but where Bryana took Taylor and Gwen’s advice to build up her performance, Sugar went full throttle the entire time, and it cost her the fight. Winner: Bryana. Sugar: Team Pharrell

Team Blake: Griffin vs. James David Carter

James David Carter chose a country-fied version of James Taylor’s “You’ve Got A Friend.” In rehearsals, Blake and Taylor advised him to find a big note in the performance so that it doesn’t seem like James “brought a knife to a gun fight” – Blake’s words.

Griffin, who is new to Team Blake, chose to go with Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me.” Griffin wanted to put his own spin on the pop hit, and Taylor advised him to really incorporate the audience in his performance.

Gwen said that James’ performance gave her goosebumps, but Adam gave props to Griffin’s “man version” of the Bieber track. In the end, Blake connected to James’ emotions and declared him the winner. Winner: James

Team Pharrell: DaNica Shirey vs. Katriz Trinidad

DaNica Shirey continued to challenge herself, choosing to tackle Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love for You.” DaNica dedicated the song to her fiancé, and told Taylor and Pharrell that she wouldn’t be the singer she is today if not for Whitney Houston. After her first run through of the song, Pharrell was speechless. “It was just so tasteful!” Pharrell said when complimenting her on her control.

Katriz Trinidad chose to sing Alicia Keys’ “Superwoman” in honor of her mother. In rehearsals, Taylor and Pharrell encouraged Katriz to let go of her training and her self-awareness a little bit. She needs to show personality to move forward.

The coaches gushed over DaNica, but Gwen and Blake both complimented Katriz on her improved stage presence – “You gave it 200%,” Blake told her, before telling her she was the cutest person in the world. Pharrell commended Katriz on her improvement, but had to give the win to his “unicorn” DaNica. Winner: DaNica.

Team Adam: Damien vs. Toia Jones

When Damien told Taylor he wanted to sing “How Do I Live” by LeAnn Rimes, she responded by telling him that it was her pre-teen karaoke song. It’s a risky song choice, but Taylor and Adam were both sold once Damien performed for them. His emotional rehearsal had Taylor in tears.

Toia Jones chose to sing Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love,” and Taylor encouraged her to really embrace the performance aspect of the song and be more theatrical and more calculating in her big moments.

Toia had Pharrell standing up and dancing throughout her performance, and Toia certainly took advantage of the energy of the song, stomping all over the stage. It was a huge contrast to Damien’s emotional, subdued performance. “That was crazy,” Gwen said as Toia’s performance was winding down. Pharrell commended Damien on his perfect performance, but said that Damien failed to bring out the big guns. Despite all the coaches going with Toia, Adam was impressed by Damien’s out of the box song choice. Winner: Damien

Team Blake: Jessie Pitts vs. Tannerr Linford

Jessie Pitts chose to sing Ellie Goulding’s arrangement of “Your Song” by Elton John. The haunting melody was perfectly suited to Jessie’s voice, but Blake encouraged her to try to project her falsetto a bit more. Taylor tried to get her to step out of her comfort zone a little bit with her movements on stage.

Tanner Linford went for Train’s “Calling All Angels,” a song choice that worried Blake at first. Blake didn’t think Tanner had the power to pull off the song, but was pleasantly surprised in rehearsals, and told Tanner that he’d never heard him sing like that before.

Pharrell and Gwen both complimented Tanner on his improvement and gushed over Jessie’s performance. Blake noted how clear and perfect Jessie’s vocal performance was, but he also showered love onto Tanner. In the end, Blake declared Jessie the winner, saying she had a “clearer vision” of what kind of singer she wants to be. Winner: Jessie

Team Pharrell: Luke Wade vs. Taylor Phelan

Luke Wade went with Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl,” saying he wanted to prove he could take a pop song and make it his own. Taylor immediately fell in love with Luke’s voice, saying she would buy his album.

Taylor Phelan, who earned permission from Taylor Swift to call her ‘Tay’ so as to avoid confusion, sang “Rather Be.” In rehearsals, Taylor Swift pushed Taylor P. to put down the guitar, which she felt he was using for comfort. Without the guitar, his performance was much more dynamic, but Pharrell cautioned him not to forget about the emotion.

The coaches loved seeing Taylor perform without his guitar, and Adam told both Luke and Taylor that, no matter whom Pharrell declares the winner, he would be pressing his button to steal. Pharrell had a tough decision, but eventually declared Luke the winner. Both Gwen and Adam began stretching dramatically as soon as Luke left the stage, and pressed their buttons the second Carson Daly announced he was up to steal. Blake followed, after some encouragement from Adam.

Adam went straight into his pitch, calling Taylor the one that got away in the blind auditions. Gwen said she thought they had similar tastes and would work well together, and Blake told Taylor he’d coach him all the way to the finale. Taylor thanked the coaches for their words, and then turned to his wife and daughter in the audience. “Babe, who do we go with?” His wife refused to weigh in, and Taylor ended up picking Adam. Winner: Luke Wade. Taylor: Team Adam

The knockouts continue on The Voice, Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
