The Voice ended its second week of blind auditions with an inspiring group of contestants. Of those auditioning, only two got all four chairs turned for them — James Irwin and Ashley DuBose – and both chose to work with Adam Levine, much to the chagrin of other coaches Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green — though that is not to say that the rejected judges didn't add talented contestants of their own.
Will Champlin of Los Angeles opened the show with Gavin Degraw's "Not Over You." His pitch-perfect performance captured the attention of Levine, Green and Shelton. The coaches fought hard. Shelton opened his praise with a blunt "I love you" — but Champlin was the first of three contestants that night to chose Team Adam.
Stephanie Anne Johnson was the next contestant to win a spot, giving a soulful performance of KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." Green and Aguilera fought hard for the cruise singer, but she ultimately chose to join Team Christina.
Following Johnson was Sam Cerniglia, who performed a raspy rendition of Michael Buble's hit "It's A Beautiful Day." Cerniglia's voice compelled Shelton and Green to hit their buttons for him, and he decided to join Team Blake.
Irwin, who auditioned in season four and didn't get any chairs turned for him then, sang R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" and caught the attention of every judge in a surprising comeback. Each judge gave Irwin praise and critique, mostly commenting that he lost himself for a moment in his excitement when all four chairs turned. Irwin decided to join Team Levine after all was said and done.
Country singer Olivia Henken then sang Carrie Underwood's "Two Black Cadillacs," surprisingly turning both Green and Aguilera's chairs, but not Shelton's. However, Shelton's agreement to help Aguilera with song choices seemed to be the deciding factor, and Henken decided to join Team Christina. Gospel singer R. Anthony was the next singer to audition and make a team, giving a run-infused performance of The Script's "Hall Of Fame." He, like Henken, captured the attention of both Green and Aguilera. Unlike Henken, though, Anthony decided to join Team Cee Lo.
The Voice then sped through three chosen contestant performances: Kearia LaShae with "Killing Me Softly With His Song," Amber Nicole with "Russian Roulette" and Emily Randolph with "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," who chose to join Teams Cee Lo, Christina and Blake, respectively.
Justin Chain of Alabama performed Jason Aldean's "She's Country" next with a performance so fun that Aguilera, Levine, and Green — none of whom turned their chairs — teased Shelton that his new contestant was more country than him. Despite the silly remarks, Shelton was very excited to get Chain on his team.
DuBose closed the show with an electrifying performance of Rihanna's "Diamonds." All four judges turned their chairs and had nothing but praise to give the singer, telling her that the challenging and usually limiting song didn't hold her back — rather, her voice cut through the room. After all four judges pled their cases, Dubose decided to join Team Adam. "@adamlevine winning all of the 4 chairs is a bunch of crap!!! #BlindsContinue," Shelton tweeted. "@blakeshelton Sorry guys, I've mastered the art of the 4 Chair," Levine responded.
Six other performers came to the The Voice stage as well last night, but were unable to sway any of the judges to turn for them. These artists included Macey Estes, Jennifer Newberry, Yasmin, Roy Schneider, Manuel Romero and Jason Kerston.
At this point in the competition Levine and Shelton have 10 of their 12 starting contestants, Green has nine, and Aguilera has 11.
The Voice returns next Monday at 8:00 on NBC.
