The Voice aired its final night of battle rounds Tuesday night, with each coach's original teams halved, plus two additions from different teams. Coaches Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green finalized their knockout round teams, and Green used his last steal to save Stephanie Anne Johnson from elimination.
Jonny Gray and Shawn Smith from Team Cee Lo opened up the show, singing “Refugee” by Tom Perry and the Heartbreakers. Gray and Smith gave gritty and passionate performances, but in the end, Green chose to continue on with Gray, sending Smith home.
Levine’s Preston Pohl and Barry Black sang “I Wish It Would Rain” by The Temptations. The singers gave a soulful and fun performance, but in the end, the four chair-turning Pohl won Levine over and continued on to the knockouts.
Next came a montage of battles – Holly Henry and Cilla Chan from Team Blake performed Ednaswap’s “Torn,” Emily Randolph and Brandon Chase – also from Team Blake – performed Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” and Team Cee Lo’s Tamara Chauniece and Keaira Lashae duetted on Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry. Respectively, the winning contestants were Henry, Chase, and Chauniece.
Olivia Henken paired off with Johnson in the last battle of the night to perform a fun and passionate rendition of “Done.” by The Band Perry. The seemingly mismatched pair – Henken is more the pop/country vocalist, while Johnson’s style is more soul/R&B – gave strong performances, and Aguilera chose Henken to continue on. Before the night ended, though, Green quickly decided to use his last steal – also the last steal of the battle rounds – to bring Johnson onto his team.
Next week, the knockout rounds of The Voice begin. In the knockouts, contestants choose their own songs to perform against each other. Each coach gets one steal for the knockouts, a new development this season.
