Pharrell got down on his knees to win over Katriz Trinidad in the third round of blind auditions on The Voice, beating out Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton while Adam Levine looked on.
Katriz Trinidad, 15, the daughter of immigrant parents, had her entire family backstage cheering her on for her audition – Etta James’ “At Last.” Katriz’s control and tone got Gwen, Pharrell and Blake to turn around before she got through with the first verse. At the end of her first run, Pharrell stood up for her, and he was clearly in love.
“I never thought that I would ever find something that I usually look for my own label. Like, I’ve been dreaming for an artist like you all my career,” Pharrell said. “I want you on my team, so bad, and I’ve never done this,” he said, getting on his knees. Pharrell’s pleading worked, and Katriz landed on Team Pharrell.
Ethan Butler, who says music helps connect to his autistic sister, and dedicated his audition song, “Beneath Your Beautiful.” Adam and Blake were the first and only ones to turn around, and Adam was thrilled to fight with Blake over Ethan. In the end, Ethan went with his original coach of choice: Adam.
Tanner Linford, 17, auditioned last year, but honestly looks like he’s 12 so that’s impossible. He said he’s two inches taller and has a deeper range (cause, you know, puberty). “When You Say Nothing At All.” The coaches were silent until the very last note, when Blake pushed his button.
Jean Kelley, 29, auditioned with “Already Gone,” and, while her entire performance was strong, it was the high notes she hit at the end that got Gwen and Blake to push their buttons. Gwen won Jean over in the end.
Chris Jamison, a triplet, sang “Gravity” and got Pharrell and Blake to turn around early, but it wasn’t until he hit the high notes that Adam turned around and Gwen followed at the last minute. Adam connected with Chris over musical influences and Chris responded to Adam’s constructive criticism. Chris: Team Adam.
Craig Wayne got both Blake and Pharrell to turn their chairs with his soulful country cover of “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’.” Craig went with his country roots and chose to work with Blake, who promised him they would turn The Voice into a honky-tonk.
Toia Jones, who performs in a band with her boyfriend, sang the hell out of “One and Only” and got Pharrell and Adam to turn their chairs. Adam worked his charm, as usual, and Pharrell decided to appeal to Toia’s independent spirit, telling her, “If you go on his team he’s going to lift you. If you come on my team, I’m going to help you lift yourself.” Pharrell’s desire to help Toia find herself as an artist won her over. Toia: Team Pharrell.
Amanda Lee’s country swag on “Put the Gun Down” got Gwen to turn around early, and had the other judges rocking out behind their chairs. Gwen was shocked that none of the other judges turned for Amanda, and immediately ran up to the stage to give Amanda her Team Gwen shirt. “You guys are all really stupid because she was amazing,” Gwen said. Pharrell agreed that he had missed out, but gave Amanda a congratulations hug.
Montage: Gwen got Gianna Salvato, but lost Rebekah Samarin to Team Adam. And Blake picked up 16-year-old Grant Ganzer.
Jonathan Wyndham, 22, closed out the night with a four chair turn around cover of “Say Something.” The singer, who was clearly nervous, was a fan of all the judges, and told Adam that he had been obsessed with Maroon 5 since he was 12. Needless to say, he went to Team Adam.
Team Adam: Alessandra Castronovo, Chris Jamison, Clara Hong, Damien, Ethan Butler, Joe Kirk, Jonathan Wyndham, Kelli Douglas, Mia Pfirrman, Rebekah SAmarin
Team Gwen: Amanda Lee Peers, Anita Antoinette, Bryanna Salaz, Gianna Salvato, Jean Kelley, Jessie Pitts, Menlik Zergabachew, Sugar Joans, Taylor John Williams, Troy Ritchie
