'The Social Network' Tops Box Office

While not all of the 500 million people on Facebook went to see The Social Network this weekend, plenty still did. David Fincher's account of the origins of the influential Web site took number one at the box office, making $23 million in its opening weekend, riding on its strong buzz and persistent advertising.

Other new releases this weekend did not fare quite so well. Let Me In, the remake of the 2004 Swedish vampire flick pulled in only $5.3 million, while Case 39, the Renee ZellwegerBradley Cooper thriller pulled in $5.4 million. The children's fantasy movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole stayed in second place, taking in $10.9 million, while the Oliver Stone financial drama Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps dropped to third, making $10.1 million this weekend.

Ben Affleck's Boston heist movie The Town stayed steady in fourth with $10 million, with Easy A close behind with $7 million. The Social Network, which received almost unanimously positive reviews from critics, still does not match the first weekend numbers of either Network star Jesse Eisenberg or Fincher's biggest films, but is writer Aaron Sorkin's biggest open. –AMY LEE
