The Red Hot Chili Peppers Honor Taylor Hawkins At The VMAs

The Red Hot Chili Peppers honored the late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, at the August 28 MTV Video Music Awards.

The Chili Peppers accepted the Global Icon Award on Sunday, and the iconic rock band’s drummer, Chad Smith, took a moment onstage to remember his beloved peer and friend.

“There’s another musical icon, a global icon, and his name is my brother Taylor Hawkins,” Smith emotionally acknowledged. “And I want to dedicate this to Taylor and his family. I love him. And I miss him everyday. Fly on, Hawk. Fly on, brother.”

Hawkins tragically passed away earlier this year on March 25. He was just 50.

At the time, the Foo Fighters tweeted that they were “devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.” They added, “Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family.”

Younger stars like Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and King Princess have all recently cited the legendary drummer as an inspiration. They’ve each paid musical tributes to him.

Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis also spread the love during their acceptance speech. “I did want to thank the sassy mistress known as MTV for supporting us for a thousand years or more,” he joked. “I also wanted to thank planet Earth and the people of planet Earth for listening and caring and paying attention to what we do. It’s a blessing.”

MTV gives The Global Icon Award to artists or groups whose “unparalleled career, continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.”

The network presented the Foo Fighters with the same award at the 2021 VMAs. They were the first artists to receive the honor.

In June, The Foo Fighters announced that they’ll play two shows to honor Hawkins this fall. The first is slated for September 3 at London’s Wembley Stadium, and the second will take place September 27 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Both shows are currently sold out.
