‘The Politician’ Star David Corenswet To Replace Henry Cavill As Superman In New James Gunn Movie

David Corenswet has landed the part of Clark Kent in James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy, which is set to be released in theaters July 11, 2025.

On Tuesday, Gunn, the director and co-chairperson of DC Studios, announced that Corenswet will suit up to play the role of Superman or Man of Steel, along with Lois Lane, who will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s star, Rachel Brosnahan.

Fans noticed Corenswet’s similar appearance to Superman actor Henry Cavill long ago when he debuted on Netflix’s The Politician.

He tried to play it cool on the comparisons. “I am officially not taking a position,” he told EW in 2019. “I think that’s the way to go. But it has come to my attention. It actually came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me, and my sort of pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman.”

Corenswet has had numerous notable roles in recent years. He starred in Pearl, We Own This City and Look Both Ways, but really made a name for himself in The Politician.

In the hit show, he portrayed River Barkley, a major character who died by suicide while dealing with social adversity at school. In the award-winning series, Hollywood, which he executive produced, he played Jack Castello, a big-eyed man from the Midwest who travels to Los Angeles after coming back from war to attempt to make it as an actor. He will star in the Apple TV+ show Lady In The Lake later this year.

Cavill’s first movie was Man of Steel in 2013 and recently starred in Black Adam in 2022. He disclosed in a December Instagram post that Gunn and producer Peter Safran informed him that he would not be making a return.

In the post, he wrote, “After being told by the studio to announce to my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build… My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will.”
