‘The People V. O.J. Simpson’ Season 1 Episode 6: The Real Marcia Clark Is Revealed

Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) is no longer just the aggressive lead prosecutor in the case. In this episode, we see her many layers.

Clark arrives late to court, flustered and upset. They have Nicole’s sister, Denise Brown, on the stand and she starts crying causing court to go in recess.

Clark’s style choices are being ripped to shreds on the news. Clark watches the TV to see a style expert refer to her as frumpy.

She decides to get a haircut to try and ease the negative media attention. For some reason it looks exactly the same, just curlier and shorter and the negative comments continue.

Clark is having family issues while she is prepping for her important days in court. Her husband requests primary custody of their children.

Johnnie Cochran (Courtney B. Vance) tells Bob Shapiro (John Travolta) that instead of responding to Clark’s “story” on the stand, they need to tell a more credible one in order to have the jury believe them.

Cochran works on a step-by-step basis. His goal is to “make them think that these cops lie about little things, so that tomorrow we can show them they lie about big things.” He takes a step in the right direction when they get Detective Lange on the stand whom reveals that he took a piece of evidence home overnight.

Christopher Darden (Sterling K. Brown) tries to loosen Clark up by turning on music while they are working late into the night but Clark wants to continue working. Darden finally gets her up to dance and it’s easy to see some kind of chemistry within their relationship.

A different side of Clark is revealed within this episode. She’s still aggressive but viewers can see her layers of what really goes on behind the scenes as a mother, caretaker, and one of her most important cases in her career.

Clark cross-examines the housekeeper of Mr. Simpson’s neighbor, Rosa Lopez, who admitted she had seen the Bronco. When Clarks tries to clarify the timing, Lopez tells the court that she doesn’t remember what time she saw the Bronco. O.J. Simpson (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is furious about that she made a fool of them all on the stand.

An L.A. Times reporter questions Cochran about his past with domestic abuse. There is a later scene, where we see Cochran call his wife and ask her about the issue. He brings up an apartment profit hinting she could become rich in an attempt to pay her off from speaking.

Detective Fuhrman gets on the stand and Clark has everything going well to build up their side of the case.

When Clark goes on recess for lunch, she finds out her ex-husband before Gordon leaked nude photos of her from a vacation. She tries to keep her composure within the court but breaks down crying.

Darden finds her in her office, crying on the floor.

“I’m not a public personality. This isn’t what I do,” Clark said.

Their friendship grows as he comforts her and makes her laugh when she probably needs it the most.

New episodes of The People v. O.J. Simpson air Tuesdays 10ET/PT on FX.
