‘The People V. O.J. Simpson’ Episode 3 Recap: The ‘Dream Team’ Attacks LAPD With Race Defense

Lawyer Robert Shapiro (John Travolta) revamps his attack and comes back swinging with a brand new, “dream team” in O.J. Simpson’s defense on The People V. O.J. Simpson, Episode 3, Tuesday night.

Yet again, we see the Kardashian clan slowly gaining popularity. Robert Kardashian (David Schwimmer) brings his children to a restaurant, asking how long the wait is. The hostess notices him from TV and gets him a table while the kids are amazed that they don’t have to wait.

The kids question their father about whether O.J. is guilty. Daughter Kourtney admits that people keep asking her about it, considering he is her godfather. Kardashian re-establishes the kids’ faith in their “Uncle Juice” and the importance of values.

“We are Kardashians. And in this family, being a good person and a loyal friend is more important than being famous,” Kardashian said.

Deputy District Attorney Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) confronts the media on the stand and formally shares her office’s charges for O.J. Simpson.

“Mr. Simpson is charged alone because he is the sole murderer,” Clark said.

Meanwhile, Shapiro has to come up with a plan because he is sinking fast. He calls his friend, Lawyer F. Lee Bailey, for some guidance. Shapiro shows Bailey what he’s up against: the media. He flips through some channels and finds lawyer Alan Dershowitz on Larry King Live attacking Shapiro’s ability to win the case.

“There’s only one way to shut up Dershowitz. Hire him,” Bailey said.

Dershowitz arrives in California with a DNA expert and the team works through the rest of the afternoon talking through scenarios. He proposes that they question the accuracy of all the evidence.

The “dream team” finds more information on LAPD Detective Mark Fuhrman who found the evidence of O.J.’s glove. Their lead investigator digs more and finds that Fuhrman had sued the city. He claimed his duties as an officer turned him into a “bigot” and his file described incidents of “beating up and attacking black people.”

Shapiro feels blessed by this gift and finally has hope. A reporter from the New Yorker comes in to interview Shapiro with a specific article in mind. Instead, Shapiro spins his racial defense.

“The systematic railroading of O.J. Simpson by a racist LAPD because he is a black man,” Shapiro pitched to the reporter.

Shapiro basically tells the reporter that the LAPD planted all the evidence and confirms that it’s all about race.

However, O.J. is strongly against it. Kardashian, Bailey and Shapiro sit down with O.J. in jail and explain to him how they want to add Johnnie Cochran to the litigation team.

“You want to make this a black thing. That’s why you want Cochran. Well I’m not black. I’m O.J.,” Simpson said.

Shapiro tells Simpson that the race defense is the only way he’d ever see daylight again.

Before Cochran joins the team, he says he has to look into O.J.’s eyes and “believe him.” O.J. sits and sheds a few tears with Cochran.

Clark realizes that a case she thought was going to be a slam dunk with evidence is now being torn apart by Shapiro’s “dream team.”
