The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced that the Oscars will be pushed back to April 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. What prompted the decision was the shut down of theaters, changes in movie release dates and the cancellations of big movie festivals.
The Oscars were originally going to broadcast on ABC on February 28, but will now be on April 25. This means that the eligibility time period has been extended through February 28 and the official nominations will not be announced until March. The Academy announced this information via Twitter.
The post read, “It’s true! Next year’s #Oscars will happen on April 25, 2021.
Here’s what else you need to know:
– The eligibility period for the Oscars will be extended to February 28, 2021
– Nominations will be announced on March 15, 2021
– @AcademyMuseum will open on April 30, 2021”
In April, the Academy had announced its plans to change the eligibility requirements because of all that had been affected in the movie industry due to the pandemic. The original requirement stated that a film must have a theatrical run of at least seven consecutive days with three showings in a day.
Because the coronavirus had closed down theaters as early as March 16, films that had their release date set during the pandemic can still be eligible through broadcasting on members only streaming services within 60 days of its home release.
Other award shows, such as the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, have not announced a change or postponement for their 2021 schedule.
