Michael J. Fox, who sidelined his acting career after getting diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1998, is coming back to acting full-time with his own show. Aptly titled The Michael J. Fox Show, it will follow the story of Mike Henry, a news anchor who is coming back to the job following a long self-imposed sabbatical after learning of his Parkinson’s diagnosis. Sound familiar?
In the trailer, Mike Henry is depicted as a loveable annoyance to his family, who seems to have preferred their energetic patriarch spending some time away from home. When he returns to the news desk, just as he predicted, the network plays a slow-motion montage with “lame-uplifting music in the background” (aka Enrique Iglesias’s “Hero"). It seems worth mentioning that Modest Mouse’s “Float On” is the trailer’s soundtrack.
When Fox decided to scale back in his acting career to focus on his family and learn to cope with Parkinson’s, he had been starring in Spin City. After his break out role in the 80s hit Family Ties, he had gone on to star in the Back to the Future movies and a string of other films. Since his diagnosis, he has had recurring guest-starring roles on Boston Legal, Rescue Me and most recently, The Good Wife.
Joining Fox in the cast of The Michael J. Fox Show are Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wendell Pierce (The Wire). NBC has already ordered 22 episodes of the new comedy series.
