The titular star of The Love Boat (1977-1986) has sailed the seas for its final voyage to a salvage yard in Turkey.
The Pacific Princess cruise ship is reportedly being stripped for parts by Turkey’s Izmir Ship Recycling Co. after 42 years on the ocean. It has been docked in Italy since 2008 when the Pacific Princess reportedly failed to meet safety standards.
“The ship has undergone several modifications over its lifespan. It had been decommissioned for five years, and renovation now would have been too costly,” Ersin Ceviker, a member of the Ship Recyclers’ Association in Turkey, told Reuters.
The Love Boat aired on ABC from 1997-1986, and the Pacific Princess was featured as a romantic setting for the show’s dramatic affairs. The Izmir Ship Recycling Co. reportedly bought the cruise ship for $3.3 million.
