The Live Action Remake Of ‘The Lion King’ To Get A Sequel

The Lion King is undeniably one of the most iconic movies from Disney’s library. With all the live action remakes that have been coming out over the past few years, it was inevitable for the Walt Disney Company to remake one of its most beloved animated films. Directed by Jon Favreau, the live action remake of The Lion King was released in July 2019. The film received mixed to negative reviews from both critics and audiences. Most people criticized the remake for its underwhelming voice acting, lifeless CGI, poor writing, bizarre changes, lack of humor and overall unoriginality. Despite the heavy backlash that the film received, it was the second highest grossing movie of 2019 and eventually became the seventh highest grossing film of all time. On September 29, Disney announced that the live action remake of The Lion King would be receiving a sequel.

Despite there being an existing sequel with The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, this movie will not take any inspiration from the direct-to-video sequel. It will instead explore Mufasa’s (James Earl Jones) origins along with the aftermath of Simba’s (Donald Glover) story after he took the title of king from his evil uncle Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and became the ruler of Pride Rock. Many people were baffled and annoyed at the announcement of a sequel to The Lion King, especially since it was agreed my most audiences and critics that the original film was a dud. The decision to not follow the original sequel was also confusing for many, since the first film did almost nothing to differentiate itself from the original animated movie.

The sequel to the live action remake of The Lion King already has a first draft completed though a release date has not been given.
