'The King's Speech' Leads Golden Globe Nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press has spoken, and it's a golden year for Tom Hooper's The King's Speech, starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, each of whom garnered a Golden Globe nod when the 2010 nominations were announced early Tuesday morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The Kings Speech dominated with seven nominations, followed closely by the boxing flick, The Fighter, and the ever-popular Mark Zuckerberg tale, The Social Network, each of which earned six nominations. All three movies are competing in the Best Motion Picture, Drama category, alongside Black Swan and Inception. The leading men in these forerunning pictures — Firth, Mark Wahlberg, and Jesse Eisenberg will also square off for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, with James Franco and Ryan Gosling rounding out the category.

The Best Actress, Drama nominees came from more scattered sources, with favorite Natalie Portman in Black Swan leading the pack, which also includes Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Williams, and Nicole Kidman for her performance as a grieving mother in Rabbit Hole.

On the lighter side, the Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical category honors Kevin Spacey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Giamatti, and Johnny Depp twice, for his roles in Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist, for which his costar Angelina Jolie also received a nod for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical.

The television nominees didn't hold too many surprises, with favorites Glee, Mad Men, and Dexter coming out on top.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 16th. —KIMBERLY STEELE
