'The King's Speech' Earns Top Honors At SAG Awards

The King's Speech took top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, besting The Social Network in what is becoming a very tight race for Best Picture at the Oscars.

After winning top honors at the Directors Guild and Producers Guild awards earlier this week, The King's Speech looks to be slightly ahead of The Social Network at the Academy Awards. The Social Network had been an early favorite after winning the Best Motion Picture-Drama category at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Individual SAG acting awards went to the same actors and actresses who won at the Golden Globes. Colin Firth won a Best Actor trophy for his role as the stuttering monarch George VI. "Until today, I would say probably, if ever I felt that I had a trophy which has told me that something's really happening for me, it was my SAG card," he said during his acceptance speech. "Growing up in England, it's not something you expect to see in your wallet, really. And so it has this glow, and I used to flash it around, hoping it would get me female attention, entry into nightclubs and top-level government departments. It didn't."

Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her portrayal of an obsessed ballerina in Black Swan, and Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won Best Supporting Actress and Actor for their roles in The Fighter.

In television, Boardwalk Empire and Modern Family won top honors for drama and comedy series respectively. Steve Buschemi (Boardwalk Empire) and Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) took Best Actor and Actress for drama, while Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) won his fifth SAG award for playing Jack Donaghy and Betty White (Hot in Cleveland) won a surprise Best Actress award in comedy. —ISHITA SINGH
