Jonathan Pryce and Eilleen Atkins deliver an acting master class in the Broadway production of The Height of the Storm, which opened on Tuesday night at the Manhattan Theater Club. As the play opens, Andre (Pryce) consoles his two daughter over the death of their mother at their country house outside Paris. But the mother Madeliene (Atkins) soon appears, and it’s less clear exactly what’s going on. The play by Thomas Keller, who also wrote Broadway hits The Mother, The Father and The Son, is an enigmatic construction where one is never white sure who is alive and who is dead – it’s a compelling – if uneven conceit. What is for sure is the undimmed talent of Pryce and Atkins. It’s worth the price of admission just to see these two greats work their magic on stage.
